Kroger policies and tips
In today’s mail, my friend Audrey asked:
Hey Heather! I was wondering what is the order you want to check out @ Kroger? Is there a particular order that would save more money? Also, how can I get a copy of Kroger’s coupon policy? I couldn’t find it on their website. I have saved, so far since our class, almost $300.00!
Answer:
Hey Audrey! I’m so proud of you! That’s GREAT savings!!!
For those of you who don’t know Audrey, she’s a recent convert to couponing. She hosted a Super Savings Seminar at her church in Greensburg, KY, about 90 minutes outside Louisville. Audrey, who has a site LittleBoogerBows where she sells the most adorable hair bows for little girls, has been couponing in a rural area with limited store selection for about a month. Her stores don’t double coupons as high as they do here in Cincinnati. So getting $300 in savings her first month–that’s INCREDIBLE!!!
Okay, on to answer the question. There really isn’t a order to checking out with the Mega Deals at Kroger. My one caveat is to make sure you have 10 items of the mix and match, or you won’t get the $5 off your order. This isn’t happening for this sale, but for future sales, if you ever have an item that is free after coupon BEFORE the Mega bonus, make sure to get a full 10 of those, and use the $5 bonus like overage towards other groceries that wouldn’t be on sale!
As for Kroger’s policy, there really isn’t a written one. You might google it and find the odd email posted here or there, but Kroger doesn’t put their coupon policy into writing very often. The closest thing you’ll find is the double coupon policy at the bottom of their fliers.
One last note–if you have RX rewards at Kroger, you want to be careful with your plus card. Instead of giving you a gift card when you transfer a prescription at Kroger, they put the money on your Plus card. When you check out, the cashier is asked if you want to use that money BEFORE he enters your coupons. If your total drops below your coupon amount, they will have to reject your coupons!! This is very frustrating, and I’ve spent much time at the register trying to get this figured out. Eventually, the store manager and the corporate office told me that when you have RX Rewards–and plan on using coupons–to hold your Plus card until AFTER you give your coupons. This way, your coupons will go through, and you can use your RX rewards properly!

LMKIA,
How do you get to hold back the store card? My store won’t ring anything up until you give them your card. I get so aggravated over this.
Thank you so much LMKIA! That makes me feel better that is doesn’t really matter which one comes first! Oh, you probably know this, but the Walmart Photo (where they take pictures) is giving away a goody bag FULL of awesome coupons! The one I like the best is $3.00 off Cascade Complete! Just thought I would tell you in case you didn’t know!
Audrey’s last blog post..Wordless Wednesday: I’m Pooped!
Well, my store went through the whole RX rewards issue with me, and they were the first ones to tell me to do it, so that’s not been an issue there. But when I visit other Kroger’s, I usually just say that I like to see the totals. And it is fun to do that–I like to see the full, before sale total and write it down. Then either hand over my q’s or enter the card, and watch the numbers come down. I’m always surprised by how much comes off with just that Kroger card!
The corporate office tells me its a preference to get the card first, but not a mandate. It makes it easier on the cashier to remember it up front. However, so often I’m at the back of the line still unloading when they want the card, and I don’t even have my card anymore so I have to manually enter it, so half the time they don’t even ask for it. They just start scanning and will ask for it before I start paying.
