Frugal Friday FAQ

I’m answering two reader questions today.  First, a vlog to answer a question about Walgreens and coupons.  Then read on for coupon policies and limits at national stores!

Q: I have been using clipped coupons for awhile now, but recently have taken it to a whole new level. I’ve got a handy little binder and all :) THANKS TO YOU!! Just this week I started printing them from home, for the great Kroger deals.(Free t.p.! who knew?)
Anyway I just was wondering if there is a limit on how many you can use (of the same product) at a time. I mean I understand I can’t go in there with twenty of them. But can I use a few at a time or is it one per customer?

Thank you so much for what you do!
Mary

Hi Mary!  First, for anyone who is new to the site, I suggest you start by reading The Rules tab at the top of the page.  This will give you a good idea of the do’s and don’ts, along with common courtesy rules we follow here.

As for limits, Kroger offers unlimited double coupons.  However, they may limit your purchases to reasonable family quantities.  At many locations this is 6 or 8 per transaction.  If I need more than 8-10, I’ll often approach my front desk and ask to special order an item.  They can have it in the store for me in only a couple of days.  Meijer. and Remke also have limits–Remke tends to limit to four of any identical coupon.  Meijer. will limit you locally (the Cincinnati region) to 6 identical coupons per transaction.  (Remember that only two will double per transaction at Meijer., the rest will be at face value.)  Target will also limit you to reasonable family quantities (decided on a case by case basis) and limits the use of identical Target coupons to one per transaction.  Kmart doesn’t have any policy in place on limits, except during Super Doubles.  CVS and Walgreens will also often limit you to reasonable family quantities.

If you read The Rules you’ll see I advocate keeping your purchases below 10 per visit, to allow plenty of time for other customers to get what they need to.  Special ordering is one trick I use to get the quantities I need while keeping the store well-stocked for other customers.

  1. I just got back from Meijer’s in Florence and apparently they haven’t read your blog. I had trouble with them taking all my coupons and doubling the ones they did take. I made sure to not have more than two of any coupon I wanted to double and that they all started with 5’s. They also said that since my other coupons said “one per purchase”, I could only use “one per transaction”. The employees were very nice, but they just didn’t get it. Know any knowledgeable managers there?

  2. You just need to go up the chain of command there. I know at least three of the various cashier managers who know the difference between ‘purchase’ and ‘transaction.’ I’ve also called the corporate office on some of their policies, more than once. In the past I haven’t hesitated to pull out the free written policy they hand out at the front door–on the front of their fliers!

Here’s Meijer’s corporate office–call them and report what happened. Its the only way things get fixed: 1800-543-3704.

  3. Dana, I just spoke with Rob, the store manager. He said as long as the coupon says “limit one per purchase” that you should have been allowed to use them. He did re-iterate that Meijer has a limit of six of the same coupon.

  4. Thanks! I really appreciate your help. Your class and website have saved me hundreds of dollars already.

  5. Hi,
I have really been working at my stockpiling and had a couple questions when it comes to freezing. Can you freeze avacados and liquid coffee mate?

  6. I’ve never done it, but I have seen people online who did. Try googling it and see what you get.

  7. WOW! This was very informative. Thanks!
